Cabover Tow Truck

I stopped at Barriere Towing in Barriere B.C. this week. They have this 1976 White Freightliner parked by the highway so I had to check it out. They bought it from an outfit in Oregon this summer.

Wow, that is awesome, love the old COE tow trucks, I'm sure they must have plans to preserve it? You say it was visible from the highway?? I guess I must have missed it when we took out trip through in September, glad you took some pics!!

Looks like there are 5-hole buds on the rear, very cool!!

This picture looks like it could have come from a pre-1980 Overdrive magazine - Wrecker Of The Month.

Throw some black paint on it and it could've had a second job as a stunt double in Terminator 2. That movie started my love affair with these FL COE's.

I actually stopped and visited these guys back in the spring as well.I could see an old Kenworth wrecker that I remember being in Edmonton back in the 80s. It was on with Grandin Towing back then. They are cool guys and have a larger collection of old tow trucks at a couple other yards in Barriere, hopefully I will be able to check out those yards in the future.

This old Chevy was in their yard this week

Any mention of COE wreckers makes me think of the old Continental Towing of Los Angeles. Never saw one in person, but I still have an old Overdrive where they were featured as either Wrecker of the Month or Small Fleet OTM.  The picture in the link below of the lineup, which includes four bubblenose Petes, was in that issue.

Some great reading:

Anyone remeber Slim's Towing from Anaheim CA that was featured in Overdrive?  I believe it was a Mack Western COE, all white, with a wrecker body that looked just like the AMT model kit.  I could only find an image of a later Cruiseliner on the web.

Both of those are interesting too Paul, I can't recall ever seeing a wrecker like the AMT version before, I guess it DID exist!!
