1960's Great Dane Convert-A-Van
« on: February 07, 2019, 03:48:11 PM »
So I was perusing the internet when I came across someone's MSPaint art of a Great Dane Convert-A-Van from the 60's. They claim the only pictures they could find were of scratch built/kit bashed models a man named Bob Sundstrom had featured in a model truck mag back in 2014. I figured, unless he either owned one, worked with one, or had pictures of one, that the models would not exist otherwise. I want to A) make this a mod for American Truck Simulator, and B) make and 3d print a model kit of it. Think you guys could help me out by finding pictures and maybe a spec sheet or something?

Post is linked and model pictures are linked on post.

If I haven't found it, I will. Believe me, no truck is safe from my eyes, Large or scaled.

That's a pretty slick setup there. 8) Can't say I've ever seen one....you would think if it was "popular" back in the 60s there would be some photos floating around. That said I would have loved the opportunity to browse through Hanks Truck Pictures to see if I could find a match but since HTP is on hiatus (temporarily I hope) this was not possible.  :( Hope someone can dig up some info.

Transcon ran "Convert-A-Flats" which I believe were made by Comet. TC wasn't the only one but probably had more than anyone. Russ MacNeil has a good picture on the HTP main site.

Indeed! The COMET built "convert-a-van" design familiar in long ago sightings by your writer
(Note: IIRC). TRANSCON with a history as a successful carrier of oil field and related, very
much flat bed businesses. Into the early 1960s, TRANSCON expanded and became a solid
player in the LTL trades (largely "dry van" operations).

The line did operate "Convert-A-Van" design trailers. It must have learned the reality of
time and labor expense of changing a trailer from flat bed to dry van, or reverse. In most
respects (IMHO), it had to have been worse than flat beds using tarps. Also, in the period,
TRANSCON may have been late on board in adopting moves into "Western Pup" configs.

SIGH! All so long ago!       Vern
