1961 WHITE 4000 TD & 35' BROWN TRAILER
« on: March 02, 2018, 11:38:31 PM »
Here is a Sylvan White 4000 that I started many years ago, I botched the paint job (with auto paint) so there is no repairing it :(, guess it's bound to happen once in a while.

I put it away for 10+ years and got it back out, the other struggle I kept having is getting the cab to sit where I wanted it to be, seems it always ended up higher on the chassis, after many different attempts over the years, I have it where I want on a rolling chassis -the kit has fixed axles- and then extended the chassis slightly. Seems in the 1:1 photos i have looked at, the 9000 (short BBC model) does sit higher.

After many "hopes" of being OK with the thick paint, I decided to go to chapter 2, my son bought me this integral sleeper version Christmas 2016 so I opted for this cab.

that led to the next issue, the chassis being too short :'( so, cut the extensions out, make a longer extension and here we have a beginning! Fuel tanks are modified from a rectangular Herpa tank off some Euro truck

I have a vision in my head for this build, not sure if I will get it from my there to the bench but that is the plan! Stand by.........

Exhaust stack is K&S aluminum tube, deck plate is spare parts from Kibiri, turn signal mounted on fenders. The kit is supplied with a small air breather which is likely correct for this truck but certainly not limited to, I have noticed quite a few options and a common version is the dual action- dual intake- style, seems a lot of White's used the dual intake into the air cap but some were shown with intake into the cap and one into the filter body. The option I chose is the latter, the basic filter is from Herpa with a scratch built air cap/lid

It looks straighter on the build then in the photo, I may have to tweak it yet.

I think we're ready for the paint shop :)

It's starting to look like that old Tractor Of The Month from a late 1960's Overdrive.
Dave Ross was leased to Chas Harris Transport with it.
He moved to Laidlaw and then started the Special Commodities division at Trojan.
Red with black fenders.

Finally found a copy.

Out of the paint shop!

Totally different direction then I had planned but I do like that colour, it is 1959 Volkswagen Sea Blue, had it mixed for some time and after not finding the dark green I had planned -along with a dark maroon, this is the way it ended up.

Jim; I was thinking about your daycab White.
Smith Transport. ( The Ontario carrier based in Toronto)
Labatts - I think they ran Whites too.
Reliable Transport - red with yellow trim.
I will try for some detail shots of Peter McGill's White if I see it this summer.

McKinlay but painted grey.

Just some thoughts

Thanks Rob, I never thought of Reliable, McKinley had some of the older White Mustangs too.

I have the book White Trucks of the 50's.......in that book there is a very classic shot of a 4000 from Omstead.........almost went with the idea but it had no sleeper, I have a feeling they had some with bunks bit can't remember!

This is such a cool build. 8) Ron Adams has many photos of these old Whites in his books..........I recall quite a few companies ran them here on the east coast (Davidson,Quinn,Cowan come to mind).

Oh yeah....Quinn is one I remember............I am getting a replacement cab from Clare @ Sylvan, I will do up one of those maybe......I might opt for the 9000 shorty that looks taller too.

With the sunshine out today, just HAD to get a look at this colour and yeah, I like it a lot! Mixed it so long ago and just found the perfect truck to put it on. One day I need to spray the little Wiking Karman Ghia that I mixed it for, the VW colour was matched up to the little VW that was molded in colour......but, back to the White!

not near finished yet but the trailer is set up on it's wheels for a look, this is the nice Walther's version of what I think resembles the Brown make quite well, I did add a side door to this one, the rest is as it comes out of the package, just re-painted

and a look at the rear, these are the kit supplied mud flaps, first time i used these, I quite like the results.

A little more progress, air horns are from Ratcliffe Models, windshield is flush mounted, needs the gasket high lit, guide posts are brass rod and the kit mirrors have been installed, I just added a detail to the back side of the mirror to give it a little more depth, interior mocked up

lights are detail painted

Alright, the finish line!

Windshield wipers added, remainder of glass installed, interior in, the dash was added, scratch-built - not that you really see it when in ::)

cowl mounted spot light comes from RiverPoint, grab handles installed

one more look

Just in time for the summertime show circuit :)
