Autocar vs. White
« on: December 20, 2016, 10:12:29 AM »
Looking at a thread posted by U.S. Mail Guy. He photographed the blue White Construcktor and I got me wondering......we know White owned Autocar, but was there any difference between these and their counterpart Autocar's. Were the White's just rebranded Autocar's? Made in the same factory?

I think it's the other way around, Autocars are rebranded Whites/Western Stars.

All I can find is guesses and speculation like this:
http://forums.aths.org/PrintTopic38091.aspx

I know Autocar always claimed to be hand built one at a time. Maybe the Construcktor was a cheaper mass produced unit?

I'm thinking White probably supplied cab and chassis and the rest was in house.

Kinda like Mack supplying Thibault and Hayes.

All good guesses, but here's what happened:

Autocar was always run as a stand-alone business after it was acquired by White in 1953. Autocar had already developed their own cab, launched in 1950. It was so popular White started to use it on other trucks. Western Star was basically a copy of Autocar for sale in Canada.

Regarding the Construcktor name started on a White product that was much lighter spec. White cancelled that and in 1976 the Autocar DC9364B got the "Construcktor" logo.  It was a very heavy spec truck for construction purposes.

Check this out and also see a ton of other Autocar photos https://www.facebook.com/AutocarTrucks/photos/a.1389490927993720.1073741829.1375502639392549/1555405458068932/?type=3&theater

Interesting thread. 8) I was lucky enough to catch a White back on 11-22-13.........albeit it does work for the Edison (NJ) Public Works and probably doesn't have a lot of miles on it. Rugged trucks indeed.........step or even jump on the fenders if you wish. ;D No plastic here unless you count the Tervis tumbler mug the driver has in the cab. :P

White Motor Company had owned Autocar, Diamond Reo, Diamond T, Freightliner and Western Star at one time although I'm not sure if White Motor Company had all of those brands all at one time

I also know that towards the end of it White Motor Company had bought out General Motors heavy duty truck division and also had helped Volvo come into the USA and Canada until White Motor Company was eventually bought out by Volvo

Personally I like Autocar and Western Star the best out of all of these brands

In 1992 I drove a White / Volvo / GMC conventional . I asked an old time mechanic what it was ? He told me the frame and most other things were White . . . It was a fun truck to drive  :)

The first year for White / Volvo / GMC was I believe 1988

That was also the last year for the long hood Autocar's and the General Motors Big Rig Truck Division
