Except that your B-model CAT puts a hell of a lot more pollutants into the air. Fact. Not going to argue about the benefits of clean air.

BTW, I think the test Pete "only" got 10mpg. These test trucks are getting 13.

My point being that they are designed to do "more" than that old Pete.

My point being that, aside from emissions they've made little progress on the "cutting edge" of fuel consumption. I'm fine with people wanting to be more environmentally friendly, but these engines STILL have loads of problems. Are they more reliable than the 2008-2011 engines? Yes, but they still fall a damned sight short of older engines in terms of reliability.

And as a business owner I'm unwilling to make that trade to placate a couple of NIMBY tree-huggers.

Not to mention, a 372 would be significantly easier to wrench on than any of these "super trucks".

Fleet trucks averaging 8-10mpg isn't progress?

No one is arguing that reliability has improved. It is what it is. I'm also guessing that parts for that 372 would be hard to come by. (Less so for a 359.)

A fair chunk of that is them speed limiting truck's.

When I've tested Cascadias I pushed them way harder than most fleets do. That was intentional. Any truck can claim better fuel if it's operated in the most efficient fashion.

If you want to see how a truck really performs, push it well beyond what it'll ever do regularly and see what it does.

Don't plan for your best day, plan for your worst day.

And, frankly, improved fuel mileage doesn't mean much when yhe equipment consistently breaks down.

When you can dispatch 5 truck's to make a delivery because the rest are breaking down you can survive those issues.

But, when you're a line operator or a small company, you need the equipment to consistently operate without pause.

And again (and again and again) no one (read: me) is claiming the today"s engines aren't less reliable and that this is a problem.

But I don't think that it makes a lot of sense to test a truck for fuel efficiency at 80mph and then say that it doesn't live up. If a machine is designed to run at a certain parameter, run it at that parameter. Test it at that parameter. Yes you can stress test it. But don't use the stress test as your only measure.

I believe stress tests are fsr more important than "average operating tests". A friend of mine once said, when offered freight or work, ask yourself if you can make it work with up to 25% less revenue than offered. If you can, go for it. It's the same concept.

The problem with placing most of your evaluation on the "average operating test" is it necessitates consistent variables, something we all know doesn't exist in trucking. When you make large investments on equipment anticipating narrow profit margins, the moment even the slightest kink develops in the variables, the whole thing can come crashing down.

That very attitude has caused some large carriers to succumb to bankruptcy.
