XPO logistic containers?
« on: August 06, 2016, 01:05:58 PM »
I was on vacation last week in So. California. Spotted two XPO Logistics containers on the BNSF /UP line in and out of the LA area. Couldn't get a picture, I was to far away and on the freeway. Has anyone been able to snatch a picture of one?

Cool Catch. I have not seen any of these yet. Con-Way's terminal is right down the street from ours. I'll be on the lookout for them.

I think this company started purchasing containers in the early or so part of 2016. I sometimes see these containers dropped off, and they seem to be in the series from 410000-414999. Those in that group that I have seen, are manufactured by Singamas. Then you have a skip into the 420 series, which are manufactured by CIMC. Just for fun, I have some of these containers figured out for when they were built. Container 410220 was built in April 2016. 410970 was built in June 2016. 411249-411404 were built in July 2016. 411561 was built in October 2016. 412041 was built in November 2016. 412637-413059 were built in December 2016. 413282-414092 were built in February 2017. 414636 was built in April 2017.

Here's one from the spring of this year.

Eastbound to either Toronto or Montreal from Chicago on CN train 148.

This operation is completely separate from XPO Logistics Freight division. I believe XPO bought Pacer Stacktrain to get into this market.

So that's why PST seems to have disappeared, I used to see them a lot on CSX and now they're a rare sight. See a lot of Ex-PST's for other can companies though, like Hub Group/EMP, etc. I also see XPO cans somewhat often down here, usually hauling to one of my moving agents in the area.

Greg, that was interesting what you said about the operation being separate. I didn't know that, not that I follow this company close, but a few miles from my house, there's a XPO Logistics facility, and now I see why I never see any containers there. I literally see tons of these containers on Union Pacific trains.

Everything partsman88 said is true, I have seen the same thing here in the Chicago area with retired Pacer Stacktrain containers, and picked up by EMP. I've also seen some retired Hub Group containers picked up by EMP as well. These are easy to spot, because they have a big EMP decal.

You are right Creg_E, XPO bought PACER in 2014.

Some of my rail buff friends keep me informed about this stuff. XPO did ditch a lot of the PST cans and EMP has taken in a bunch. There still are PST containers out there but XPO contractors are pulling them.

XPO uses contractors for their intermodal and expediter fleets unlike the former Con-Way. The expediter fleet was formerly known as Express-1...

This company must be doing pretty good, because I saw a fair amount of new containers on a few Union Pacific trains today, including some more 420 series containers, a few 421's and a 424 series too. These containers are pretty cool, but with all of the containers that they have, (maybe in the neighborhood of 7,000?) it's hard to find these dropped off at warehouses and factories. I only see them from time to time.

Container 424633 was manufactured by Singamas, a few months ago, in September. These containers are now numbered up to at least 425849.

COFC Logistics has also picked up some ex-Pacer cans, as has UMAX. The COFC cans often have the corner posts painted green.
