My 1/53rd Collection
« on: January 07, 2015, 09:37:04 PM »
I don't have a lot of Tonkins, as they frankly take up quite a bit of space. However, I have made some room for some more trucks so may try and get a few more (they are much more affordable than DCP these days), but for now, here's the trucks I do have.

Werner Enterprises Freightliner Cascadia. I found this truck on the Werner website some time ago. I don't think it was internal but it was
pretty difficult to find elsewhere.

JBS Carriers Kenworth T700.

May Trucking Freightliner Cascadia.

Transport Gilmyr Peterbilt 379. This truck is actually a turnpike doubles set, but the converter dolly and second trailer were still
put away, so I just photo'd it with a single 53' box.

Schneider National Freightliner Cascadia. I believe this was first Ride for Pride truck they did. I bought it some time ago,
back when Midwest Replicas was still in business.

Lee & Eastes Kenworth T800 truck-trailer tank combo.

Gurney Trucking Kenworth W900L. This one was a tractor only model.

And here's the one Signature Series truck I have, the Conway Freight Sterling doubles set in the current color scheme.

I like the looks of the JBS truck, they do take up a lot of space but I like the detail in the 1/53 scale.

Just updating this thread with a couple of trucks I bought earlier this year at MATS.

First, a Freightliner Cascadia for Dick Lavy Trucking

And second, a Volvo VNL670 for C.H. Express. I find Tonkin's Volvo casting to be one of their most accurate.

Nice pair! I very much agree with you on Tonkin's Volvo castings; I sure wish they'd have all their castings that accurate! Now, this CH Transport rig is one that I have debated getting a few times, and now that I see it in your pics I realize I should have gotten one. ;) ;D

Thanks! I think most of their newer castings aren't half bad. The Kenworth T700 and T680's seemed to be well proportioned. The T660 is a bit ungainly, and pretty much all of their Peterbilts are wrong. The 386 and 579 both look thrown together, the 386 using recycled parts from the 388 tractor ::) I also don't like that their Peterbilt drive axle wheels have almost no deep dish to them, which makes the casting look very off. The 587 however was pretty decent I thought. All in all, I think there are quite a few pretty nice Tonkin runs out there, and as of late their quality is going back up. The trailer suspensions actually sit level and the newer tractor runs are more well proportioned.
The CH Express is an older run. It was for sale at Diecast Direct's closeout booth at MATS. I think I got it for less than $20 (they were trying to sell off a giant collection).

Thank you, but I am really not looking at buying any trucks at this point due to space and I also just made a big Diecast Promotions purchase. I appreciate the offer though, and if I am looking at any more trucks I will let you know! 8)

I enjoy some of Tonkins stuff since I enjoy collecting freight trucks. Tonkins got a decent number of doubles and other LCVs made up which is great. Just wish they were a little more detailed some of them. As for DCP, love the detail but they just dont make a whole lot for what Im interested in. I think I have more Winross than DCP in my 1/64 collection! ;D
