I am surprised nobody mentioned the KTA Cummins??

well ..... actually i clean forgot about the ol' KTA's. There's an old fibreglass cabbed Atikinson in Tassie with a KTA but he wont let ya close enuff ta see what its set at, but man-o-man it'll pull. Nothing can get near it

I thought his new Volvos had the Cummins ISX? :???

Could be, but you definitely can't get a Detroit in them, and (IMHO) look for Volvo to drop the Cummins option in a few years.

After driving a truck with a Cummins 220 as power, then having the boss buy a used truck, a former CSRT Freightliner, with a Cummins 335, the favorite engine of mine is of course a Cummins 335, big HP for the day.  Cummins always gave good service and would go the milage without the CAT price-tag!

Any engine runs better when it's cool and damp out any thing you can do to cool the air going into the motor is a good thing. IMHO it's hard to get an mechanical engine to pull as hard as an electronic one without sacrificing fuel mileage. I pull a 6 axle and run a 550 CAT with a box on it. We have a couple of guys with turned up 3406C's and their fuel mileage is pretty bad if they run them hard.

The cooler your INTAKE AIR the better the HP, however the higher HUMIDITY you get a decrease in horsepower and this is were the electronic engines adjust / compensate for it and the mecchanical engine cannot.

In a carburated gas engine you can change the jets in the carb to  adjust for higher humidity , fuel injected ( electronics ) can self adjust

Humidity can help power because the air becomes denser, this is the same theory as water and alcohol injectors on cars work on. It also helps the cool intake. IMO thats what the hydrogen injection system was about but I'm not an engineer.

Favourite Engine:
6-71
Designed by Detroit Diesel to convert diesel fuel to noise.
(kerosene too, if the stories are true     )

I doubt there was a more distinctive sounding engine.

Since I lost 50% of my hearing to a Detroit, I'd agree!!!!

Doesn't more HP mean more torque usually?

Not necessarily.  At one time, HP and torque were pretty closely linked.  There was a formula which was used to figure torque, IIRC it was Torque = (HP x 5252)/RPM.  With the 2100 RPM engines which were common inthe early 70's, you needed about 400 HP to get 1000 lb/ft.  Nowadays, 1000 lb.ft is common on just about anything over 300 hp

In 1967, the Maxidyne broke the link between HP and torque, the 237 had more torque than an engine of its HP would normally have (the number escapes me at the moment), and 1973's 285 put out 1080 lb/ft, pretty respectable even by todays standards, expecially considering that the 285 was a mechanically-coverned engine.

Much of the ability lower HP engines to put out high torque can be attributed to electronic engine controls, which can be programed to give an engine a torque curve suited to a specific job.

What would you do with 700 hp?  That would be awfully hard on fuel.

It would be fun to drive, and powerful. Not practical, but fun.
