Its the TORQUE that does the work not big HP, see many big HP  that get blown away by lower HP higher torque engines

Doesn't more HP mean more torque usually?

I drive my pete with a 475 cat every day and when I first drove it, I thought it was a rocket ship, until I drove this 550 3406E with higher ratio rears. holy cow.

my favorite engine would have to be the cummins signature, mine is set at 565 hp,which in enuff without being to much for B Double work.
With older engines I'd have to say, hmmm, a 400 cummins big cam  or an 8V92TA would be my pick of the bunch.
or even an old 903 cummins

Sorry guys but I'd have to say a 370-hp 12.7 Series 60 Detroit.

Why?
Because of the money it didn't rob from me with it's outstanding fuel economy.

However, from an enthusiasts' point of view, where would you start?

The rattle of the old 1600-Series Cats - the "Clatterpillers".
Any 2-cycle Detroit - they always sound as though they're in a hurry to get somewhere until they meet a strong headwind.

As with Gary Smith, the whistling of Mack's Series Charge Maxidynes.

Perhaps best is the sound of Mack's V-8s.
Doesn't matter whether it would be the old 60's vintage 864 or the latest E-9.

In Magman's video "PILGRIM'S PROGRESS" he and his partner Pete finish the video with a beautiful shot of a New Zealand-based Mack Ultra-Liner pulling away from a standing start.
What a sound!

the 903's were very fast and pulled good on the flats the only thing that could stop them was a hill !!!!!

None of the new engines are worth what you pay for them in my humble opinion.

I'd stay away from the C-13 Cat personally - in fact I turned down a lease on a new one - since the C-13 is really based on the old 10-litre 3176, an engine with nothing but numerous valve train problems and the twin turbo would make me think.

If that first one ever let go, the 2nd would automatically swallow whatever came it's way and look at the trouble you'd have then.

Nah, .... none of them today are what they used to be.

E-9's went to about 1,000 hp for military applications I believe.

Renault sold the E-9 engine in their Magnum series of tractors at one time also and I believe Europe uses a different standard for setting horsepower figures.

I think the 1,000 hp E-9 was termed "Hyper-Charge".

I would have to cast my vote for the Series 60 Detroit as my favorite engine? The S-60 along with the T600A are in my mind the top two biggest innovations to hit the heavy truck market in the last 25 years.. I drove a few 12.7 425 S-60s over the years, they really made a believer out of  me.. I have posted a link below to a Series 60 brochure that has a interesting quote from Jerry Moyes concerning the S-60...

I like the 3618 Cat alot, the problem is nobody builds a truck with a engine compartment big enough to hold this 333 liter (20286 cu in) monster  :-D

I am surprised nobody mentioned the KTA Cummins??
