Title: Anybody Click On The HTP Site Lately?
Post by: charlie on January 24, 2019, 10:04:04 PM

Yeah, I think he usually backs off while he is gone........if not, he wouldn't have much of a vacation! I do know he is not in a good wifi area most of his time away so that would also limit activity! We're just going to have to keep the forum going here instead!

The situation is a lot more serious. Look at that : http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/

It's sad, I hope Hank will come back with a solution and will continu to keep the collection in live.

I have noticed that if I search for truck companies on "Google Images" often photos come up from Hank's & our members .

This is a lot more serious than Hank turning it off while he's on vacation. Looks like the big cause is assholes explicitly stealing content from here and reposting it, even going so far as to cover up watermarks.

This is why we can't have nice things. Idk what the next move is but the future looks grim gents.

Lodge Members -

Some of us with long running concerns about outright abuse of use of myriad
photos, and willful contempt of intellectual property rights. On a practical
level, for the most part only the largest of players (with their own Law
Departments) can and will challenge any unauthorized use. Among smaller
players, resources are simply not there. In HANK'S remarks (see direct
link here previously), it is quite plain about his misgivings.

In agreement with HANK, your writer understands his thinking about so
many sloppy practices which have come with so called social networks.

As a side note I noticed the number of visitors to the Forum today is pretty low. I wonder if they realize you can still get on the Forum by typing in "Hanks Truck Forum" & googling it. In other words the Forum's still rolling along....we'll just have to wait & see what happens to HTP when Hank returns from vacation. Here's hoping for the best. :)

I was emailing with our host today to discuss the situation.
The Forum is still open, as we all see, and Hank is mulling the future of the website over.
I had to go and create a direct link to the Forum and that was Charlie's suggestion.
Thanks Charlie!!

I glanced through the Canadian Copyright Act last night but it was over 170 pages so I did not read it in full detail.
I can't offer anything more...as I said to Hank it would devastate me personally but the final call is his.

Rob.

I  didn't realize what was going on as I had no problem posting a pic last nite on POTD---then when I went over to FB I saw Hank's post. I don't have any pics on the main site and rarely visit there and I  created a direct link to the forum long ago by simply attaching it to the favorites addresses when while I was on the forum.

Hank did tell me that the Forum is safe for now and I believe a couple of years.

That seems to be the trouble with most regulations and  laws for that matter, by time you sort through all the BS, you've either gone broke, run out time, frustrated enough to say screw it.....and the problems continue!

Hi All,
Sorry to put my main site offline. I've had this on my mind for quite a while recently and I guess after receiving an email from a long time truck photo contributor, when he told me that now there seems to be a simpler way for people to write over the watermarks on the pictures from my site. So that makes it simpler then cropping off the watermark. I won't bore you all with my person feelings right now.

But I realized something after reading Rob Archer's post and someone else who said there is no direct link to Hank's Truck Forum. Well I just created a link to the Forum now.

This entire decision has been really hard to deal with and I feel really bad when I receive emails from a lot of people who have depended on the content on the main site for their well being.

Time will tell if I can come up with a solution. But in the mean time please enjoy Hank's Truck Forum while Hank's Truck Pictures in offline.

I understand the problem well I have had my Pacific story ripped off several time that I know of. I have also had people ask me for permission for a photo or too and have always said yeas if they ask.

I have an idea: why not make the site private? Put forward a criterea that users have to be members of the forum in good standing with at least 20 posts (or something similar)? Ebough that the moderators can get to know you. If you want more, then make users sign a further non-disclosure agreement?

Just my 2c.

I still don't understand why people make such a big deal about pictures? Who cares. They are pictures. You aren't going to get rich and famous from them.

Anything I do online, I already KNOW it is no longer my property. Who cares who takes my pics and comments. Just glad somebody can use them. Have at em.

responding to Pay Star's comment---Some members have posted pictures of trucks and events that were history before the forum started and others have posted them as their own .  My own pictures are of trucks and events of the last 10 years mostly and few family members will have an interest when I move on so I won't be offended if they are posted by others but as matter of courtesy I do feel we should not represent something as our own that is the work product of someone else. With few exceptions pics I post here on  the Forum or on Facebook are marked with my  name and date. Most of us do not have legal training to qualify us to interpret what photo activity is protected by law and what is not . end of rant

I agree and think most members here would also agree. We do a good job of crediting the proper owner when sharing someone else's shot though, so that isn't the problem.

Also Walt even if your pictures aren't watermarked, it's still your legal property and you have the right to claim it as such if you find someone else presenting it as their own. Don't be afraid to fight for your rights. I don't mind people sharing my photos, or enjoying it on their own, but when they start sharing it and presenting it as their own is when I have a problem.

Oh no!! I just looked at it last night yet, or was it Sunday, forget! Definitely will miss the best site ever in all of the years regarding great truck content and great history along with modern day. It was a fantastic way to see the wonderful collections that those that took the pictures shared over the years!! Hopefully we can enjoy the Forum yet as it too has been a great way to contact and make friends in all sides of the continent and the world for that matter along with some awesome pictures!

A big thank you Hank, an era that will remain in my memory for years to come!!

I'm very sad and shaken; the content of the pictures section on Hank was invaluable covering trucks, some technical sheets,
trucking history and stories, some old time advertises and an infinite number of truck pictures some of them illustrating ex-
tremely uncommon specimens. Without exageration we can say that we had here a very large part of the trucks and trucking memory. We can find the best and the worst on the web but this site was on the very best side.

For me the web is synonym of short-live;, it's the reason when I can I always choose the hard copy of a product.

Thank you very much Hank for all those years of high quality offer. All the best for the future.
