Title: 2017 Large Car Mag Southern Classic (Updated 3-2-19)
Post by: partsman88 on November 24, 2018, 07:27:43 PM
It wouldn't feel right doing coverage of the 2018 show if I didn't do my coverage from 2017 first, so here we are. There was a variety of reasons I never shared this, the main one being after I finished editing these last year I found an entirely new/better method of editing, and I didn't feel going back and redoing it all over again. So I put it off, and now I have coverage from 2017 and 2018 to share. Please excuse all the grain, the first day I went down there the conditions were miserable and I tried to make the best of it.

I'll start off with a set of a few show trucks I took that were sitting at the Petro in Raphine off 81. Two of these I caught coming out of the Blue Beacon, but I didn't realize what a terrible spot I was at until I saw the pics so I did some heavy editing to get rid of the lights.

First up, stashed all the way in the back of the Petro Raphine was this clean 379 for MH Transport of Plain City, OH:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4912/32164352108_733a91e4b8_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R1fHhY)

Next we have this nice SFFA Pinnacle for T.W. Menges Trucking of Grantsville, MD. I did a little after/before so you can see how terrible my original shot was:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4908/32164315178_265e259cbe_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R1fwjf) (https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4863/31096215837_fa71edbd85_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PnSeAn)

Then we have this LTL9000 for Kurtz Enterprize out of that Ephrata, PA conglomerate of small outfits with a bunch of clean working show rigs that I know you guys have seen before (Nolt/Kurtz/etc.)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4812/45310821924_db4dd0e7fe_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2c2XNKE) (https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4844/45310822664_9e143de02d_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2c2XNYq)

And here's a clean 379 from Slaymaker Rentals of Washington Boro, PA:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4910/45985332442_b3cca888e2_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2d4yRem)

Next up at the actual show one of the early arrivals was this pair of W900's for Grimes Enterprises out of Dailey, WV:
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4857/45985321252_bd6ca5afcf_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2d4yMUq)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4851/45985321072_bcb6a72c7f_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2d4yMRj)

And here's a couple group shots featuring the Grimes Enterprises W9's. The Petes next to the Grimes are a pair of small outfits out of that York/Lancaster/Ephrata hotbed in PA. The Pete next to the Grimes W9's is a Paul Zook rig, not sure if he traded that or if he has another rig but he brought an old school W9 to the show this year.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4839/31096246737_5203af7a42_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PnSoM8)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4895/31096240157_ac29a1c369_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PnSmPF)

This was just a tease, I'll start getting into the bulk of it this week.

Oh man, that LTL9000 is gorgeous! 8)
The big T800 rotator in the last shot sure is a sharp looking beast.
Also, as usual, the editing is top notch. ;)

Thanks Jim. Maybe it's just me but I felt all the light poles ruined those shots, but I wasn't willing to give them up.  Other than the clouds I'm pleased with how they came out afterwards. And thanks Wreckerman! The LTL9000 isn't my favorite Ford rig but it's definitely nice to see something unique like that still in great shape. Also I'll have to dig up some shots of that T800 rotator, it's a regular at the show every year and I believe I have pictures of it from the 2016 show somewhere.

Here's a couple night shots taken from the first night at the show:

Pete 379 for Travis Miller of Upton, KY:

Last year I followed through on my plan to set up the day before the show started to catch all the trucks arriving. Had some success with it as there was a pair of separate convoys that all arrived, the first convoy was made up mostly of operators out of PA like Nolt, Kurtz, etc. and the second was a convoy of Bill Warner and Hinkle Trucking rigs which I will post later. The weather didn't cooperate and most of these shots are pretty grainy but it is what it is. Hope you guys enjoy:

First up we have a W900A for Kristopher Bair of New Oxford, PA. The USDOT # has since been deactivated.

The night shots turned out very well, the others are fine too, sometimes when the sun is not out, the colours are clearer so the trade off isn't all bad! I like that FLC120, pretty simple and pure, that Kurtz KW is sweet too.

Thanks Jim! Plenty more where that came from. And you make a good point about the colors being the right exposure. I don't mind light-to-medium clouds but when it's that cloudy it gets more grainy because there's less light available.

The 717 gang has some amazing trucks  :).i'm a little perturbed that I haven't caught any of them myself. >:( The FLB & I were leapfrogging each other last week in VA......it's a very sharp cabover & glad you caught it. 8) I saw maybe 5-6 COEs last week that i'd never seen before :).don't know where they've been hiding but maybe i'll have better luck on trips down south in January. ;D

Gotta say, the night shots are superb. 8)
Out of curiosity, I'd assume you employed a tripod and your cameras bulb timer?

The Superliner and the FLB sure look good.
First thing that popped into my mind on the FLB was "got wheelbase?". ;D
The W900B looks good too, I've always liked when trucks have brightly painted frames, definitely adds class.

Keep your eyes out Charlie, I've caught a couple of these PA rigs around here and they come to the SC every year. Glad you caught the FLB though. I have a few more shots of some COE regulars from around here too, there aren't many but there are a few. Best of luck on your future endeavors to my neck of the woods :).

Thanks Wreckerman. Yeah, all those long exposures use a tripod. Rarely switch away from shutter speed priority mode for those, I have a good feel for most situations depending on lighting now. You can check my settings on my Flickr page, I post all my EXIF data so anybody can learn. Feel free to ask if you need help.

The Superliner was one of my favs' too, it was popular enough at the show he pulled it out and set it up on the dock over there so me + others could get a "loading" shot of it. I'll be sharing that later.

All the other PACCARs are nice as well, but the DIDS IH really stands out, not your typical large car but looks very nice.

Here's a few shots of the 4 rigs Lanita Specialized brought out to the show. Also I have been searching for 1/2 hr, but can't find the carrier thread for Lanita even though I'm like 95% sure one exists.  So if someone knows how to find it please let me know as I'd love to add them.

First up we have what I think is the owner's rig IIRC:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7868/39829066773_cf62f7b168_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23FynVP)

Then a trio of sharp W900's:

Class all the way. :)I've shot all of the trucks in your pics....either on the road or at the yard in Aetna PA. :) Any Diller trucks there? ??? They seem to share the PA yard with Lanita & are just as sharp but don't know if there's a connection between the fleets.

Thanks guys :). I agree, the owner's truck is the cream of the crop. That entire fleet is pure class all the way around. I didn't get the best impression from talking to their drivers or the owner, they didn't want to discuss specifics of what they haul or go into too much detail on the trucks so I left them alone after that.

And thanks for looking Charlie, I guess I'll start one.

Here's a small set featuring a trio of late arrivals to the show, nabbed them as they were coming in.

First up is this sharp 359 for Lewis Transfer of Grayson, KY. They brought a pair of rigs out to the show:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7813/46969990872_3c34581e16_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2eyztSQ) (https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4904/46297823804_dceecbfb14_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dxbs2s)

And finally we have this neat quad-axle conestoga for JRM Express out of St. Paris, OH. First time I've ever shot one of these beauties.

That Lewis 359 is awesome, but I'm not really digging that color.
The Lewis 379 on the other hand has it all, love that red paint, and it's got all the right custom touches. 8)
The JRM W9 is really nice too, that trailer is very unusual, I'd guess maybe a steel hauler?
Nice stuff all around. ;)

Thanks Wreckerman! Mostly agree on the 359, but I don't mind that paintjob that much because it isn't a plain white. And according to SAFER that JRM W9 hauls metal sheets and coils, so yeah your guess is on point. Seen quite a few of them when I was in Ohio but I couldn't get a clean shot of one until I went to Chicago lol. They only travel certain roads, I'm guessing because they have to have permits for being overweight.

That W9 steel hauler is sharp, I always like the multi-axle trailers, they are common in the Great Lake States and Ontario/Quebec regions.

I agree Jim, my only complaint with the rig is the orange/white paintjob. Don't think it pairs well in a half/half paint job like that. If it was orange with white accent striping even that would look better.

Mack R model for a private owner out of somewhere in VA. I think he's a local as that GMC showed up in 2016. No markings anywhere on the rig though:

Love that Trans Tech T800. 8)
The Kurtz W900A is a real beauty, a classic looking rig.
That Keplinger 359 is a heck of a service truck, I'd love to see the inside of that service bed, I'm sure it's got some nice equipment.

Thanks guys :). Hard to argue with the Kurtz KW, it's just sharp all around and most of the look is period-appropriate aside from the big Texas bumper (but I don't mind that). Wreckerman I posted that T800 just for you haha, I remember you liked a previous shot of it. And I'm not sure if that Keplinger 359 still earns its' keep or if they just keep it around for show duty, but it's nice regardless.

Here's a set of randoms from the show, caught some coming in, some heading out, and some on the lot. I'm probably gonna do 2 more sets after this, one set of night shots next and then a set of group shots after that to finish it off. I'm ready to wrap this up lol, been spending most of my winter days indoors doing editing and I have a mountain of shots ready to share.

We start with a IC Transtar CO4070A for a private owner out of somewhere in VA:
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7901/46400990584_f6c21b5f44_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dGicV3)

And then we have Lee Hi's Paystar 5000 6x6 (Lee-Hi being the property where they host the show):
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7814/47124928991_154b066b21_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2eNgzzH)

Marmon 57P? (I need a Marmon expert stat lol, their Wiki page is bare and there isn't a lot of info online about Marmon models and their history) for Neil Trucking of McDowell, VA. He brought 3 Marmons out to the show in 2017.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7914/46400991284_f4391ecc8e_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dGid87)

Neil Trucking's other 2 Marmons, I guess the one on the left is a 57P and the other I have no idea, just call it a Marmon COE lol:

Those are some good looking trucks there Brian. :) This is one of the shows I've always wanted to attend. My old car just died after 233,000 miles so maybe with my new ride i'll have to put this and few others on my calender & see what happens. :-\

Love that Paystar wrecker! ;D
All the Marmons are cool, as is the Ford Super Duty.
The Pete cabover is nice too, but I believe it's a 362.
The IH Fleetstar is cool, don't see the old IH stuff like that to often.
Fun trivia fact: did you know that the old IH emblem (like on the Fleetstar here) was designed to look like a farmer on a tractor? The i being the front of the tractor with the dot as the farmer's head, and the H to be the tires on each side.
I didn't know this myself until watching Classic Tractor Fever on RFDTV the other day. :)

All these are great but that IH 4070A is near perfect, great looking trailer to make the combo even better and the IH Fleetstar is cool too! The 58-60 F series Ford is another one worth mentioning here!

Jim.

Thanks guys :) Sorry to hear about your car Charlie, hopefully with your connections you got a good deal on a new one. Just picked up a new ride myself last year, after 10 years and 150k the Corolla I used to have had valve damage in the head so it was on borrowed time. It sucks having a payment after 5 years of no payments but OTOH I don't have to worry about reliability for now. It sounds like you were able to get a lot of miles out of it so at least there's that lol. I hope you're able to make it down this year, if not I've been thinking about doing one of the PA shows this year, maybe an ATHS show or something (not sure yet as I haven't made any concrete plans aside from the Apple Blossom festival in Winchester, they have a ton of antique fire apparatus there every year). Plenty of time to make plans though.

And I'm glad you liked the Paystar Wreckerman, I added it just for you haha. It's at the show every year and I'm so used to seeing it now that I didn't even take a shot last year. And I'm glad you liked the shots too Jim.

Here's the coverage from the light show the 2nd night there. After this I'll be finishing with group shots and maybe some rando's I passed over.

First up, the pair of W900's for Grimes Enterprises out of Dailey, WV:

Wish I got the name of this operator, he was the friendliest guy at the show. Fed me sausages and beer for dinner after I walked the lot all day. He drives this rig on occasion doing beer runs out of Massachusetts with his brother and a friend.

I make no secret that when it comes to lights on a rig, my belief is "the more lights the better!". ;D
A really nice set of shots here Partsman, the trucks are all super nice, and the photography is top notch.
The 379 for Reinsfelder is my pick though, gorgeous rig. 8)

Side note: the Trans Tech is a T270, and a nice one too. :)

Thanks guys  :D. Wreckerman I kinda agree, I like lights too but I prefer it to be tasteful. Sometimes you see a truck with too many lights just for the hell of it, it looks tacky in some cases. Luckily that's not the case with any of these lol. And thanks for the confirmation on the T270, I figured it was because of the GVWR, and the brochure says you can spec it to come out under 26k so the operator doesn't need a CDL.

And thanks Jim, glad you liked them.

Charlie, they haven't announced the dates yet for the 2019 show but I expect it to happen in mid-to-late October, usually it's on the second weekend of October every year. If you check Large Car Mag's website they have a tab for Upcoming Shows, but it hasn't been updated for 2019 yet. Glad you liked the shots too.

I actually looked on LEE HI's website (the truck stop where the show is), and it says this years Show will be on October 19th.

Here's a link: https://www.leehi.com/media

I've been scouring the web lately for dates for different shows that I'd like to attend, and of the several I've got on my calendar, the Large Car Mag show is one I really (really, really) want to go to. :)

Thanks for the info Wreckerman. I'd really love to meet you and Charlie there (or any other show sometime this year). The SC will be on my list again this year as I search for the perfect spot to find trucks coming in for the show, so please feel free to mark it on the calendar. More company is always welcome.

Anyways, my better instincts tell me to ignore this, but I am slightly surprised they seem to have cropped my image to use on the page though. I'd have been happy to let them the whole image if I got some credit for the shot. The cropped shot just looks bad imo.
