The Volvo is a VT880 which is no longer made. Weight issues led to its demise from what I've heard.

Really nice photos, that's a sharp looking Road Runner Peterbilt. The Robert IH is unusual, I wonder what they use it for. It appears to be a Paystar 5000 model.

It is indeed a set-forward axle Paystar. I once asked about these and got some good answers - so do a search. I believe that Robert inherited these trucks when they took over another company; but I couldn't tell you who or when. I think they might be on a dedicated account.

Interesting variety of trucks. I like the COE for Atlas Van Lines.  I have never seen this Paystar for Transport Robert.  Some time they buy  trucks for specific contracts.  Some of their trucks  are used when needed by their Heavy haul division, Transport Watson.

This Paystar services the RockTenn/Smufit location on 730 Islington Ave in Etobicoke. There use to be purple (Smurfit?) company trucks and trailers that serviced the RockTenn location in the late 90's early 2000's. Can't remember the exact company that serviced the location but they had very distinct purple rigs and trailers. Maybe Rob Archer or Wayne Crane remember the company or photographed one of the rigs a couple decades ago but now Robert services the location. Mainly volvo daycabs but the Paystar is seen regularly as well.

I've never seen these Paystars pulling anything heavier than a tandem van.

BTW Smurfit used to run tan tractors with big tan graphics on the trailers. I don't recall the purple trucks.

Smurfit?
Tan units used to be for MBI - McMillan Bathurst Inc.
Somewhere Someplace I think I have a picture of a trailer- which I found.
Is this the scheme you are thinking of Oso?

Yup - although I also vaguely recall white trailers with Smufit/MBI logos being pulled by tan tractors. They used to park a few of them in Guelph.

I believe that the Paxton International is a 9400 - the older  90's model with the 70's style cab. It's painted in Kriska's old colours.

P.S. That Volvo straight truck looks like an abomination!  ;D

Oh I never knew that it used to be an Ex-Kriska fleet. Nice.

The Volvo straight truck looks pretty well equipped. I never seen a variant like this, must be custom built. Do Volvos do straight trucks? No right? I suppose somehow someone thought of slapping a Volvo cab onto a glider, add a box and then tadaaaa, this... abomination.  :P

Paxton is an old line fleet based in Peterborough.
Looks like they are still in business too.

No relation to Kriska that I am aware of.
That UPS Freight Volvo would actually be Canada Cartage - thay have some equipment painted up for that contract.

Volvo has its finger in the straight truck pie here in the states. Pretty popular with the expediter crowd with sleeper units and I've seen quite a few non sleeper straight trucks on with different companies (Deka comes to mind).

From what I can see you are mostly in the Malton-Brampton area with these.
Derry up to Steeles?
The General Cartage F-Liner is turning from Derry eastbound to northbound Airport Road.
That area is hardly recogniseable from when I used be there in the 70's.

Erm, the General Cartage F-Liner is actually turning from westbound. Close though, nearly won the jackpot Rob!

Whoops, my ability to interpret your statement went haywire. You're right, but no grand prize for you!  8)

You cropped that last batch a little tighter I see.
I don't have too many pictures from the 70's. I worked at the Air Cargo area at the airport but that was all torn down when they put in Terminal One ( the new one) .
There were a couple of restaurants in Malton I would go to at lunch time.
What is the name of the Hotel just down the street from Zet's?
That used to be called The Avion and was where we would go for a beer.

I just noticed that my photos are taken too tight this time. Anyone got some expertise PS skills to expand it?  ;D

I rarely go to Zets to eat (they have another small restaurant east of Airport and along Derry, just right beside couple cars yards), but the food is good-- just that it's relatively expensive IMO.

I think Zet's is the oldest restaurant along the airport area. The other good place to eat is at China Garden which is north east of Derry and airport.

I don't know which Hotel you are referring to but right beside Zet's there's a NU hotel.
Title: Re: ZeProme's Random Truck Photos
Post by: Rob Archer on October 04, 2016, 07:01:55 PM
The Zet's Express on Derry Road used to be Pepi's Drive Inn and wasn't expensive.
That was a good place to go and watch planes when they used the north-south runway.

It's the Comfort Inn on Airport Road is what used to be The Avion.
http://www.choicehotels.com//hotelmedia/CA/ON/mississauga/CN568/480/Exterior1.JPG
There were bars on some of the windows because they kept the deportees there.

Maksteel had a lot of trucks then. Sureway Transport had their yard on Torbram and they would come up the Airport Expressway to Dixon/Airport Roads to Derry and turn left. The 427 didn't go past Highway 401, except for the short stretch to the Airport.
Lots of cattle haulers and dump trucks used Airport Road too.
This was taken near the corner of Airport and Derry but doesn't show Malton.

Douglas Aircraft had a plant on the southeast corner of Airport and Derry. They used to bring the wing sections in by rail, ther was a siding where the International Centre is and the switcher locomotives would block the road at rush hour.

That's about all I can remember for now.

Rob

Just checked in on this thread here, don't know how I missed this one, great pics and cool stuff. Procter's fleet is nice, I used to drive for MBI. tht was formed form Consolidated Bathurst Packaging. The trucks were green/white, nicest look they had, then MacMillan Bloedel -lumber division was red/white- bought into to it forming MacMillan Bathurst Inc. and the caramel/toffee trucks came to be. I left there before the Smurfit takeover and don't remember any purple/white trucks from them. Here is a link from the main site for a MBI set. These were from the St.Thomas Plant.
http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/groeneweg_macmillan_bathurst.htm
I thought I had one picture of the Consolidated Bathurst colour scheme in that collection, I will have to search for that.

The old Mack dump trucks you caught were Supeliners.

I'll be checking in again on this one, great stuff!

Jim.

Side note, I always see Robert fleets with yellow decors on it's bolts on the tire rim. Any explanation for this? Perhaps it's just aesthetics or does it serve some sort of purpose, like a lug nut covers?

The Robert day cab looks pretty sharp, great to see different trucks well taken care of too, shows pride! Those yellow items around the lug nuts do serve a purpose, they are there to see if any of the lug nuts are working their way loose with a quick walk around glance. Never seen them in a different colour so for Robert they actually enhance the look a bit!

Damn... I would want it, but I ain't got the cash...

I don't know about using this for city duties, doesn't seem well suited for turning nor backing in rather tight loading docks. A VNL430 is better but I would hate to not have a upper roof so I think a VNL670 is also a considerable choice.

But... I really do like it.

The diagonal bar line across the grille indicates it is a Volvo/Autocar, correct?? If not, the diagonal bar would be absent.

Jim.
Title: Re: ZeProme's Random Truck Photos
Post by: Jon_G on November 06, 2016, 11:09:26 PM

That is an Autocar ACL-series SBFA. It is most likely a later model build, as the older ones did not have the Volvo logo on the grille, they simply had the diagonal line but no Volvo logo. These were replaced by the Volvo VHD series, and the Autocar name was phased out until it returned as a garbage truck manufacturer.

Even though I do know there's Volvo Dump Trucks out there, I thought for sure that one was an Autocar, I just didn't know If I was seeing things to what looked like to be a Autocar badge on the side of the hood to me, Volvo bought out Autocar, GMC Big Rigs and White Trucks for the 1989 titled model vehicle's, not to long after 1989, Volvo got rid of the GMC And White names for Big Rigs...

Love all those cool dump trucks!! The White is not related with Freightliner but was the last of the Whites as Volvo had entered the equation at that point. It would be a White Volvo or possibly White GMC Volvo .

You're right, it is a Volvo White. I must have mistaken it for a Freightliner instead.

I kind of knew what the gold bulldog meant but I thought the truck was genuinely made with real Mack parts although in what category was the question.

You are correct, gold Bulldog means Mack engine, gearbox, and drivetrain. It is a tradition that launched with the Maxidyne engines back in the 1960s. Since Rawhide is simply a trim package on the SFFA Pinnacle, it can be had with any of the engines available in the standard Pinnacle.

Speaking of Macks, I caught this rarely seen and pristine 1988 Mack RW700 Superliner for Ainey Haulage Ltd from Brooklin, On.  8)

The driver of this truck was very proud and excited to share some facts of this truck. He said, IIRC, the truck was saved from a junkyard and brought back alive this June. The rear bunk was replaced and it's authentically manufactured in Oakville, Canada. He showed me the serial numbers on the door as proof. Very glad to have a moment of conversation with him, wish him the best and safe trips!

That Midland KW is outstanding indeed!

The big white dump truck with all the lights in the bumper is an International Paystar, cool shot! The Mack CL700 is also a sharp dump, very clean. Interesting to see Atlantis is still around, cool looking truck and i also like the colour on that Prostar.

Not much updates this time. Thought I caught some interesting trucks though.

International HX Cement Truck for TransCrete Haulage. The color gives a distinctive sharp taste and the tri-axle configuration is uncommonly seen.

Western Star for H.D. McFarlane Transport Inc. A rarity to see these old giants on the road. I think it's like early-late 90s model?

Here's something rare that I don't see often. A Kenworth hauling an odd trailer for LimeGreen Equipment. What is it?

Pristine Volvo VNM for Clement Cartage. I see that the driver has some pride with the decal which is rare for typical "white" working trucks.

Grove Crane  for unknown company

Freightliner Crane for Gensteel. The headlights are weird.

Lastly, a fleet update for Amar which is another large GTA Intermodal carrier. A pair of brand new Evolutions absolutely stunning. Notice that they adapted a completely new appearance and logo. Hope to see these pairs rolling soon!  8)

Side note, I saw some other similar color-themed trucks beside them so It's possible there's more.

Nice Series since I've last visited this thread, Zeprome, I really like the E.B.D. Enterprises Trucks and H.D. McFarlane Transport Inc. Western Star, It reminds me of the truck that I had my senior year book picture next to, Except the one I had my senior year book picture next to was a very dark maroon and was a day cab with a single exhaust, It was the same style western star though, The Western Star 5900 series is what it is, They got making the 5900 series Western Star at the same time Freightliner stopped making the FLD-112 and FLD-120 back in 2003, The cab and hood on the 5900 series Western Star was updated in 1998, The one I had my senior year book picture next to was a 1999, The Western Star 5900 series came out the same year the Freightliner FLD-112 and FLD-120 came out, But, Before 1998, The hoods were more aerodynamic and much more narrow with much larger head lights and cab was still the 1997 and older Western Star Cab, That White motor companies has designed, The 1998-2003 5900 series Western Star definitely looked much better than the 1997 and older 5900 series Western Star's

I see a lot of beat up ones around here, but occassionally spot a sharp one in nice shape, usually an OTR unit passing through. The FLD's were well-built trucks, and are easy to work on as well. Its successors were very much disliked by former FLD users as the FLD surpassed them in many ways, though a lot of people are saying the new Cascadia is pretty close in design layout and build quality, especially now that the Mt. Holly plant in North Carolina is producing them from what I have heard.

Lastly, this unusual very red Pete for Polaris.

Very lastly, this unique Jeep taken during a dinner at Zet's. What a scoundrel and mean looking Jeep!

The Highlight straight truck is interesting, definitely not a common configuration but in this case it looks sharp.
The International at the Tallman Center is actually the new LT, which is basically a Prostar with new headlights. ;)
Gotta day my favorite is the AZ wrecker, a tough looking rig for sure. 8)

I love this design from MEMS, Most Efficient Moving Service. The question is, do they derp?  ::)

It's my first time visiting the Vision dealer at Etobicoke. Buying truck parts are sometimes like scavenger hunting. None here, go somewhere else. Fingers crossed and hope that the parts are available. That said, here's a Volvo for Musket getting some errands done at the dealership.

Good to see you back here again, great set overall, that Contract Pete is a beauty, the tow bar unit on the new Cascadia is one I have not seen before.

Didn't know that Acton (of Surrey BC) made it across to Ontario! That is quite an expansion for them, they run a pretty clean fleet here as I have caught many over the years, mostly clean!
