Title: Car Haulers in Ontario
Post by: Rob Archer on August 08, 2009, 04:30:48 AM
A drive by; he was going one way while I was going the other.
When I down loaded the pic, I saw it was OAK-WOOD Transport , a car hauler from Ingersoll Ontario.

Great color on that one. Don't know if I'd rather have the Volvo or that beautiful GLK-Class.

I find those GLKs a bit too angular, so I think I'll go for the Volvo, hehe.

There were two "portable parking lots" parked outside the local Chrysler dealer on Wednesday December 22/09.
One was an ordinary Sterling painted in white with green trim.
(http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/45133/2532417320104600183S500x500Q85.jpg) (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2532417320104600183HLdnMs)

The other was a Volvo painted as a LEASEWAY MOTORCARS but decaled for AAG
(http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/42267/2131128150104600183S500x500Q85.jpg) (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2131128150104600183CUvDqd)

Is LEASEWAY still in business or is it another Fallen Flag?

I wonder why all car carriers are old equipment? It's like the stopped making them 15 years ago and have to make due with what's left.

LEASEWAY seems to be still going. They have trucks staged in Oshawa on Stevenson Road South.

I saw this former E & L Volvo car hauler at a lot near Ford Oakville Assembly.

It is similar in paint to the old Maris Truck Lines and KID Equipment is located in the old Maris Truck Lines barn.
Maris was the prime carrier for Ford Oakville from the 50's to the 80's.

I saw that ex-E&L truck when I stopped by there on Friday.  Seeing that dry van in your pic made me wonder ----there

seems to be a change in the look of K I D's lign up.  Where are all the Mitsu Fuso trucks that they had for sale?

They used to be parked there.  I did see the one they have the snow plough hooked too, but are there any others?

Sorry, George, I didn't notice. There was at least one parked against the fence but I really wasn't paying attention to them.  I was there on Saturday.

I shot this Pete with an empty car carrier trailer on the eastbound QEW.
**March 2015 This was a webshots photo that has disappeared**
It appears to be from Oakwood Transport of Ingersoll Ontario who use owner operator car haulers.
I couldn't find a thread about them, just some chit chat from a couple of years ago.
Car hauling has changed from the '60's and 70's when teamster carriers using daycabs dominated the industry.

Any other pictures of Oakwood Transport?
I'm sure I must have some.

A Peterbilt from L Hansens.

On closer examination the unit numbers are different and the truck I shot has a decal on the bunk that the driver is using electronic logs.

It might be a match - replacement for

the orange Sterling since the Pete was parked where I found the Sterling in December and L Hansen is the carrier in both instances.

Two of the four bridges over the Niagara are Commercial Jim.
The Queenston -Lewiston, considered the Port of Niagara Falls, and the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie to Buffalo are the Commercial.
The Rainbow Bridge is strictly for passengers, buses can use it too.
The old Whirlpool Bridge is now restricted to NEXUS card holders only.
The only railway bridge that sees commercial traffic is the INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE between Fort Erie and Buffalo.
AMTRAK-VIA uses the Whirlpool upper level.

Thanks Rob; I thought didn't think Queenston Lewiston was considered Niagara Falls. Is that the one at the end of the 405?? Really stretching my memory here!! Fort Erie/Buffalo is quite a ways down the road yet, correct? I have crossed both of those before and Rainbow I did in a 4 wheeler.

This morning on the Queen Elizabeth Way there were two Cassens Sterlings traveling together but the loads on both were mixed.
There were Dodge Ram trucks on the upper deck and Chevy Cruzes on the lower, on both trucks. Times certainly have changed in the Car Haul business. Back In The Day manufacturers wouldn't allow something like that.

(no picture; the OPP are on a "Distracted Driving Blitz" this week. Any use of hand held devices will draw the attention of The Law and I'm sure cameras are a "Hand Held Device".

Walt posted a Teamsters link on another thread.
I found this article
Canada: Turmoil Up North

Allied has laid off about half of its 600 workers in Ontario, after giving up the Chrysler (Windsor) and GM (Ingersoll and Oshawa) traffic. Both Jack Cooper and Cassens are struggling to move the traffic they acquired.

AWC has hired a number of the laid-off Allied workers as drive away workers to get Chrysler vans across the Ambassador Bridge to Detroit for Cassens. Cars and vans are still piled up around the plants.

Furthermore, Jack Cooper has a substandard, percentage pay Teamster contract in Quebec, and the company wants to extend that contract to its new work at the Ontario GM plants.

This would undercut the Teamster contract with Cassens and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) contract with Allied and AWC. It could also open the door to the Jack Cooper drivers leaving the Teamsters for the CAW.

That explains a sighting I made earlier this week of a Volvo in Allied colours but with another name that I didn't catch on the cab door.
Allied must be dumping their unused equipment.

Cassens has about 10 Ontario plated trucks (Internationals), the original when they set up in Ontario back in 2001.
The rest of the Canadian fleet is Illinois plated.
The Canadians have to do the domestic work.
An agreement between the US and Canadian teamsters limits the other from working 50 mile IIRC from the border. I also believe an exception was allowed about a year ago, but has recently been stopped. It allowed a relax in the border agreement on a load for load basis. This allowed a US truck to load out of an Ontario plant, and deliver directly to the dealers stateside.
The agreement has been around for a long long time. The independants dont have such an agreement, thus they have bunks, and carry on work as any other 'normal' trucking operation in North America.

Carrying on - Quebec based car hauler Transport Leberge opened up a yard in Oakville last year.

The Ford shipping compound is hard to take pictures of. There is a lot of foliage and a fence to make foreground clutter.
I see trucks from UNITED ROAD in there loading at times.

Most of Ford's prodcution seems to be shipped by rail.

You're right Rob, there was an Auto Haulaway yard just beside the St.Thomas Assembly. Just about ALL trucks were Ford Louisville with the exception of a few IH and one KW I remember. Before the L Line, the F850 trucks were most common. Most were single axle tractors with tandem axle trailers. There were a lot of nice looking trucks though as I would say about half of them were O.Os!

I saw a bunch of those yellow/green western stars for CCT this week around the Fort Erie border. Bramalea is keeping them busy.

As for being assigned to Chrysler, never heard of that ever happening except the Toyota trucks pulling exclusively toyotas.
That US truck will go to the closest, or busiest plant, or then again could go home empty.
The US/Canada temsters union has a one for one load. They pull one out of Canada, and they owe Canada one from the states..... beyond the 50 mile border ageement.

I used to laugh pulling into a dealership, with the latest & greatest of the competition sitting on the overhead.

A few drivers live in Woodstock and area, and some used to be allowed to take the trucks home.

Does anyone know what ever happened to Anchor Motor Freight? The Leaseway car hauler from the east. They used to run those Leaseway green GMC`s with the tag axle tractors and them smoking Detroit diesels.

Anchor became Leaseway became PTS and went bankrupt in 2008. The whole fleet was sold off at give away prices.

A load of Write-Offs?
I don't recognise the carrier decal on the door of this Freightliner. I started looking at the cars it is hauling and they are all damaged.

"Parting out"?
Repairing and going to used car lots?

Hmmmm.

They do sell them "as-is" ;D Ironically, even if a used car looks great, it still could be more money in repairs.
On a different subject, did Wig Wag sell the K100, or is it a twin?

I think the insurance company pulls them from local storage and towing yards and stock piles them in one yard.
Toronto Auto Auction auction used to hold alot of wrecks, some not much more than crumpled metal.

Chrysler finance used to park all the repos next to them.... and sometimes it was difficult to tell the difference.
I guess if you're getting repo-ed..... why bother vacuuming and washing it. LOL

I haven't updated anything here for a long time. ::)

One Sunday morning in mid April this car hauler Freightliner was parked on a side industrial street.
The driver looked to be tidying his cab.

There is a bunk...a small add on behind the cab.
That's "Old School" for sure. Used to be common 40 or 50 years ago.
