Title: Garbage Trucks
Post by: Rob Archer on April 08, 2009, 04:34:37 AM
You can't get much more "vocational" than a garbage truck.

This new unit was parked at the Mack dealer in Pittsburgh back on 12/29/06.  You almost never this setup around here as most trucks are small cab-forwards, and most of those are front loading.  The City of Pittsburgh still uses the rear loading units though.

When I was growing up, R models ruled the road as far as garbage trucks.  My father was driving one when I was born and that is where my love of Mack's came from.  I wish the Granite would take over that role...but that is only a dream.  Nice pics guys.

I know, I know, I'm working on it.

Here is me and another driver in front of an older 320 with a Maxon Front Loader Body.  It was just out of the paint shop when this was taken. That day the smell was awful as the paint on the exhaust system burnt off.

Good Catch. Its odd to see super singles on refuse equipment. From the Aluminum wheels I'm guessing they are trying to keep the tare weight down.   I wonder how they will hold up to the heavy use and abuse of the refuse duty cycle. I know Schneider took the supers off their inter modal daycabs as they were having problems.

I have not noticed them too much in the area, but it is me not paying attention. Advanced Disposal (AKA Stateline) covers Nassau County, residential, front end and roll offs. They have a really good looking fleet mostly of Mack MR's, with a few Internationals and Sterlings. Cool livery of Gray packer bodies, white cabs and a blue oval with a white A for a logo. They took over the BFI routes. At one time we had both WM and Advance covering the same residential areas. Guess WM descided to cut back and let Advance take over. I think they have a big territory in Duval County (Jacksonville) too.

Seems like almost everyone in FL is a transplant, including me. I only know of a few people who can go back a few generations. Guess I better behave myself, would hate to get thrown out of a state.  :-)

Anyone remember a 70's movie called "Solent Green" with Charlton Heston? Or am I showing my age? When the riots got out of hand, they would call in the scoops!

re recycling by the trailer load==
they use that type of container for trash in our area-blue for recycle-green for yard waste and black for common trash and garbage. the trash trucks pick them up with a clamp device and dump then into t he compactor body.  3 different trucks pass thru the neighborhood every monday and each picks up the assigned colored cans.  the way those are loaded in the semi I am assuming they are empties as being made of plastic with no reinforcing they wouldn't stack very well loaded unless these are constructed differently than any of that type that I am familiar with. this type of collection operation means the truck only has the driver and those in  this area are RHD altho I have seen a few that have both LHD and RHD but the newer ones pretty much drive from the right side only and the driver can monitor what is going on with the pickup. The hauler in our city is a subsidiary of Republic Industries.

Nice closeup on the Pete Ray--Paccar has been using this cab style for a long time .  I believe that it has also been used and badged as a KW. A local hauler recently bought a bunch of new ones(Petes) as Cerritos converted to  the 3 bucket system of segregating trash

The 320 is one of those specialist trucks that is perfectly evolved for its niche.  It was last redesigned in '97 and has remained essentially unchanged since.

I have been wondering why alot of collectors are using rear end loaders for collecting recyclables? I have noticed that my collector (American Disposal) does this now and it looks like Rob's collector (WM) does as well. They used to use side loading Recycling trucks with the individual buckets for paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic. I have not seen one of these trucks in the logest time. Does anyone know why collectors seem to be going this way? :?

To answer your question; in Region Of Peel (who contracts WMI to handle the pick ups) a Recycling Centre was built where they sort the recycled goods. Prior to that the residents had to sort; at least the paper products in one bin and the glass, plastic and metal in another.

The older segmented trucks also used more labor as every house has 2-3 separate bins to tip.  On a 800-1200 stop route this adds up.

They also don't come by until late in the afternoon.
One day, of course, they'll fool the heck outta me and come by just after 07:00.
So, here is a Tuesday truck that had just stopped at Tim Hortons and was heading out on the route.

The older style cab dates the 320 as a pre 1997, while the Maxon Front Loader Body makes it mid 90s at the latest.

Seem that the local division of Waste Management have  received new trucks or at least new for the area. I took those pics this afternoon and it was the first time I have seen them.

I took this last pic yesterday along TCH. This brand new Waste Management Autocar is coming out of Labrie shop where  he have received  his garbage collection equipment. When they have to be delivered in the NothEast, trucks are usually driven to their destination. If they go further West or South they  take a ride in  a lowboy. This one is pulled by a Pete 386 from Transport SM out of St-Come in Beauce County.

Good Shots of WM in Quebec. I've never seen a Sideloader on a F550 like that.  It seems like you'd only be able to get 15-25 houses worth of trash on it before having to return to the "mothership" truck or transfer station.

The cab was originally designed by KW and used by both and now is only sold as a Peterbilt in the USA and Canada. It has appeared in Mexico with all the Peterbilt parts and badged as a Kenworth.  It  is built in the KenMex plant.

Well. Duh! It's been at least 120 days.... ::) ::) ::)

Monday is Garbage day on my street. We are 2 years into this latest system. The City supplies the residents with 3 carts that hold sorted garbage.
Gray lid is for garbage.
Blue Lid is for recycle.
Green bin is for kitchen waste.
Gray is picked up one week; Blue the next and Green is collected every week.
The driver uses a grapple crane that lifts the cart to the top of the truck.
This past Monday was Gray - garbage - and I shot this Mack LR with the cart being lifted by the grapple and dumped in the top of the collector truck.

Gray, blue & green. We only have 2 cans down here..........garbage & recycling collected every Friday. They tried recycling every other week but we seniors enjoy extended Happy Hours & the bottles & cans were just overflowing. ;D
