Title: Outside Carriers Pullin' for Walmart
Post by: Paul Kane on August 18, 2008, 03:23:23 PM
Apologies to the receny Walmart thread.  I was working on this idea for a little while and just found the last shot today. I thought it might be interesting to see how many outside carriers have pulled for Walmart.  Dwayne, maybe you could throw a Werenr shot this way.  Anybody have any others?

JCT does. A picture would be pointless since we don't use their trailers.

Why...what is wrong with this?
Wal*Mart's pullin' for Wal*Mart more than likely.
I was going to combine the two but didn't have time this afternoon.

Because the point of this thread is to post photos of outside carriers doing Wal-Mart's work. Crete, Swift, Werner, etc... like in the rest of the photos. I see Crete more than anyone, but have yet to get a photo. :|

Simple deal.

In Canada , at least in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), there are no Walmart trailers.
All the store deliveries are handled by a company called ROFF Logistics.

Technically it is a separate company: Wal-Mart Transportation LLC.

Also by a couple of other names before that
North Arkansas Wholesale and Wal-Mart East.

here is a are two shots of a Swift owner operator parked at the Cerritos CA store. You have to look real hard but there is a decal on the fuel tank

Rob, long before ROFF there was Muir's.

SCM and Wal-Mart propelled them towards the size they currently are.

That's where my pictures are from - when I get the time to scan them.
Gotta go .........

Dwayne, maybe you could throw a Werner shot this way.  Anybody have any others?

This is my last photo of my short lived Werner career, I don't wanna talk about them too much because this isn't that type of forum. But, I will say it was a mistake to work for them. My choice too leave had nothing to do with Wal-Mart and I loved the account.

Just found this one i took last winter.  PODS(Portable On Demand Storage) was pulling Wal-Mart freight out of the Hermiston DC.  I found this to be odd as i thought they were a private fleet and not for hire.

Took a look through the archives & came up with the usual suspects.  :-D  Several years ago Wal-Mart used a lot of O/O's or smaller trucking companies to deliver down around my area; now it seems that the little guy's been squeezed out.  :-(

Wal-mart runs a few different Dedicated operations with outside carriers.  They have a Dedicated National account, a Dedicated Reefer National account and then they have their Dedicated DC accounts, both dry and reefer.

Wal-mart has 4 dedicated carriers that pull dry freight for them across the nation:
National Freight from Vineland NJ
Dart Transit Company from Eagan MN
Covenant Transport of Chattanooga
US Xpress of Chattanooga

Wal-mart has 4 dedicated carriers that pull reefer freight from California to their produce DC's:
PAM Transportation of Tonitown AR
Shaffer Trucking(Crete) of Nebraska
Dart Transit Company of MN
one carrier from the GA area that I can't remember the name of right now

They also run these carriers to do store deliveries from their Grocery DC's:
Swift supports:
Grandview WA DC
Riverside CA DC
Fontana CA DC
Corrine UT DC
Casa Grande AZ DC
Los Lunas NM DC
Robert LA DC
New Albany MS DC
Moberly MO DC
Harrisonville MO DC
Monroe GA DC
Pageland SC DC

Crete supports:
Ochelata OK DC
North Platte NE
Sterling IL

Werner supports:
Tomah WI

CRL/Greatwide supports (or maybe they don't since they filed Chapter 11)
Pauls Valley OK
Cleburne TX
Terrell TX
Temple TX
New Caney TX
Shelbyville TN
Winter Haven FL
Arcadia FL
Macclenny FL
Opelika AL
Brundige AL

Schneider supports:
Olney IL
Gas City IN
London KY
Washington Ct House OH
Wintersville OH
Henderson NC
Gordonsville VA

JB Hunt supports
Johnstown NY

Finally....Wal-mart Fleet trucks support
Lewiston ME

There are many carriers that are asked to help out with the DC's when extra capacity is needed, but these above are the only "dedicated" carriers.

That should cover it.

Charlie, as far as that YRC getting their hands in the Wal-mart stuff, YRC operates a warehouse in Jersey City NJ that picks up, consolidates and redistributes Wal-mart freight for the Northeast just because of the high volume of vendors up there!

What about the Hermiston, Oregon DC? I see just about every major carrier in that one.

Who has the Dedicated for it?

I take that back...looks like a portion of Hermiston is Grocery.  Appears the fleet runs trucks out of that one.

Is this trailer missing a number? This trailer number is supposed to be a 48' in an older scheme. I would think the first digit should be "1", thusly 121176.

I take that back...looks like a portion of Hermiston is Grocery.  Appears the fleet runs trucks out of that one.

Hermiston is just a dry goods warehouse,  Grandview, WA is the Grocery DC that serves the Northwest.  Im at Hermiston or Grandview about 4 days a week.  NFI, England, Knight, US Express, Covenant, Crete/Shaefer, Swift, and Schneider all pick up overflow that the Walmart drivers cant cover.  The only reefers that Come out of Hermiston are the Tridems that run to alaska.  They usually pick up backhauls coming back to the Hermsiton DC.  They then get loaded up with dry goods coming out, and then sometimes pick up reeefer freight out of Grandview on there way to alaska.

Sweet.  My old flat top 43439 was moved to the Chicago area to work on some dedicated account up there.  Be sweet if You eve manage to spot it.  Bet its not in as good of shape as it was when I moved out of it.  Pretty cool to see its twin.  My old truck is easy to spot as the Unit number is a different font since the truck had been repainted prior to getting assigned to me.  Heres how she looked on the last run I did with her.

I spotted several what seemed like independent o/os pulling for Wal-Mart in the Midwest on my recent trip. Now, granted, they may have been leased on to some company that had an account for Wal-Mart, but they certainly weren't company trucks, though - I remember especially a ratty old Pete 377 SFFA that I saw two times over in Nebraska. I may have gotten pics of some of them, and some time soon I might put them together in a bunch and post them here. Just have about 13000 pics to go through first, hehe.

Steve,  that truck was running out of the Menomonie WI DC.  They have a couple trucks up there that make store deliveries.

As far as small O/O's running out of Wal-mart DC's.....here is the breakdown of how other companies are needed.

They keep the folks at the top busy, when there is extra work it flows down the line like this:

Wal-mart Fleet trucks get loads first
Wal-mart Dedicated Fleets (Werner, JB Hunt, Dart Transit, Covenant, US Xpress) get extra store loads at any DC's they go in to
Local Dedicated Fleets - Run Store & DC-DC Transfers out of their local DC only
Small Owner Operators - run store freight out of a specific DC

So....like last year, Wal-mart could barely keep their own trucks moving, so the rest of the fleets stopped hauling store freight.  This year on the other hand.....Wal-mart is SUPER busy.  Dart Transit, for example, has ran the most store freight this year than EVER.  I would assume the loads will filter down the line as Wal-mart is more and more busy and the economy turns.

My breakdown was for the Dry Van side of the business only really.  However, Crete would be considered a Local Dedicated carrier, they do all the Grocery business out of the North Platte NE Grocery DC.  That DC supplies quite a few stores all over the area.  When it comes down to the Grocery side of the business, there are only a few major players.

Schneider
CRL-Greatwide now
Werner
Swift
Crete
JB Hunt
...and Wal-mart's Private Fleet

Schenider does Washington Ct House OH, Auburn IN, Olney IL, Wintersville OH, Bedford PA, Gordonsville VA, Henderson NC and London KY
Werner does Tomah WI
Swift does Grandview WA, Riverside CA, Casa Grande AZ, Los Lunas NM, New Albany MS, Robert LA, Moberly MO, Harrisonville MO, Corrine UT, Pageland SC, Monroe GA, Fontana CA
Crete does North Platte NE, Sterling IL and Bartlesville OK
JB Hunt does Johnstown NY
CRL/Greatwide/Whoever They Are Now does all the TX ones, Cleburne, New Caney, Temple, Terrell plus the three Florida ones, Macclenny, Arcadia and Winter Haven plus they have Clarksville AR, Opelika and Brundige AL, Shelbyville TN and Ochelata OK.

The only Grocery DC where the Wal-mart Private Fleet soley does the pulling is the Lewiston ME DC, which if you have the DCP Pete 387 reefer model, that was inspired by a driver up at that Lewiston ME DC.

I work for Dart Transit out of Eagan, no longer in Operations but in our Information Systems department but when I worked in Ops, I worked in our Dedicated division and I along with my other account manager, in charge of managing the day-to-day operations of our Wal-mart Dedicated National division.  Dart contracts with Wal-mart 45 trucks.  Those trucks pickup Wal-mart/Sam's Club freight on Wal-mart trailers at Wal-mart vendors, Igloo, Sterilite, Cott Beverages, Pennington Seed, Wrangler, HanesBrands, etc (Wal-mart has over 900,000 vendor locations they pickup from across the country) and we typically would Live Load at the vendor, then pull the trailer to their DC's across the country and drop the trailers, grab another WLMT trailer and pickup another load close by that DC.  Wal-mart contracts with US Xpress and Covenant as well to do the same thing.  Wal-mart associates in Bentonville plan our trucks on loads all across the country, naturally keeping deadhead between loads at a minimum and keep our trucks moving until its time for that driver to go home for his/her hometime.  It's a pretty slick operation and all parties involve benefit from it.

As far as knowing which companies haul out of which DC's, because I was on the Wal-mart Dedicated account, those of you who have ever been in transportation and have had to schedule deliveries with Wal-mart, you use an Online Scheduling system which has many features built in to it.  One of those features is a "MAPS" section, shows where all the Wal-mart DC"s are, color-coded by dry freight, grocery, sam's club, import dc...etc.  They have a Fleet Breakdown Grocery DC map and it lists the carriers that are contracted out of those specific DC's.  It hasn't been updated in about a year, which makes sense why JB Hunt is out of Johnstown and NFI is in.

Also part of my duties were managing a Reefer Team Operation fleet also dedicated to Wal-mart hauling produce off the West Coast back to all the DC's across the country.  That was really cool....however, trips to Wal-mart with my wife were longer than she had wanted because I would spend 20mins in the produce section walking by all the different types of produce naming off which city/town in California/Arizona the specific produce came from.  She got annoyed, specially if she was in a hurry!   :-D

American Dream Cargo Transport LLC out of Salem, OR (USDOT 2104198) docked at a warehouse in the Pasco Industrial Park with a Sams Club Hyundai skirtted dryvan, supposedly out of the Hermiston DC, but curious as to why he's here?

Local vendor pickup most likely.

Covenant runs on Wal-mart's Dedicated "National" fleet.  Bouncing across the country picking up usually 1 stop vendor freight (Igloo, Wilson Sports, Pennington Seed, etc) and taking them straight to Walmart DC's, where they drop the WLMT loaded trailer, grab an empty and head to the next vendor load pre-planed by Walmart Transportation.  I think Covenant has about 45 trucks that do this nationally, Dart Transit has 40 nationally, US Xpress, Swift and Werner are mixed in there too.  Cool little gig.

Also...FYI for everyone....the number of Outside Carriers pulling for Walmart this month was drastically reduced.  Walmart is restructuring and cutting a bunch of carriers out of the mix.  I believe US Xpress, Covenant and Dart Transit are 3 for sure.

Interesting, because capacity is soo bad across the country, we're seeing more and more companies being brought in to help out with day to day operations that would otherwise be done by a private fleet or a select group of carriers.  Opening it up to everyone!

Earlier this year, a good friend of mine went through Swift's drier school in Richmond, VA and graduated at nearly the top of his class. He was then assigned to Swift's Jonestown, PA terminal and put on the Wal*Mart account, domiciled out of the WM DC in Pottsville, PA. He told me, so far he has delivered to more WM's than he can remember, but they have included Elmsford, NY, the huge 3-story WM in NJ, a WM near Baltimore, and athe WM in Lebanon, PA' which is where he was when he called me the other week.
He is pulling both reefers and dry vans but prefers dry vans...NO TOUCH freight!
His tractor is a 2015 Cascadia.

I always thought it would be cool to pull for WLMT for a carrier.  Their trip sheets are some of the most informative trip sheets out there.  Easy to read directions for the DC, informative info like Store Manager phone numbers, if you can park and take your break, where on the property you should park and take your break, etc.  And they are happy to see you show up!

Shouldn't the "Language Police" be objecting to unilingual trailers in Quebec?

Haha, that is true!

I did see an Anderson Trucking Service  ATS pulling a WLMT van yesterday.

I imagine, capacity is already tight...Wal-mart is probably paying some better rates than normal to get their freight to their stores in time for 6pm TurkeyDay- Black Friday sales!

I like those b-train setups! How awesome would they look behind a US Walmart tractor, like one of the new 579s? :)

JB Hunt pulling for Walmart on I-80 in Nebraska, June 2015. Definitely not a common sight out there.

Interesting. Prime and Werner, Schneider and JB Hunt. Seems the world of outside carriers pulling for Walmart is totally different in the South from what I am used to seeing in the West and Midwest on my trips...
