Title: What kind of truck do you drive?
Post by: billy77 on August 22, 2005, 03:16:44 PM
This is my first post. I'm from Australia and would like to hear what kind of trucks ppl drive.
I am an owner/operator of a 1995 Western Star 4864 with a 470hp Detroit and 18 speed with a 63" sleeper towing a 45' fridge van (or reefers as you guys call em). Look foward to hearing about them.

2005 Freightliner Columbia with a I believe a 58" bunk.  450 Merecedes power and a 13 speed.  I pull a 53' reefer up and down I-5 hauling produce and usually run between 60,000 and 75,000lbs gross.  It's my retirement job and I love it.

A 1981 Mack R685T. Single axle, daycab with a Maxidyne EM6-250 and 5 speed Maxitorque trans going through what I think is a 4.17 rear axle ratio.
My boss bought it new back when I was a 19 year old know-it-all just one year out of High School.
Top speed is around 70 mph @ 2400 rpm  . When I'm on the highway, my right foot stays glued to the floor. It has more of a zest for life than I had when I was 24.

I don't know what the lure is Can Man. Why not run er' at 60mph and save the fuel! I guess not everybody is out to earn to money in this racket, but with such small profit margins you?d thing these guys would start smartening up.

I drive a (don't have any pictures) 1986 Ford LT9000 with a 350 Cat, 13 spd Eaton/Fuller and what I think are 3.70 or 3.90 rear ends (we are not quite sure). It pulls a 1977 or 1978 (can't remember) Arne's gravel end dump chassis with a new style 2001 Arne's box on it. The tractor is really beat but it still does the job.

Mike I was running with a US trucker last week that has a new Columbia with a 500 HP DETROIT and has had a lot of fuel system problems , he also mentioned CELADON has a pile of new FREIGHTLINERS with DETROITS and they are having problems with a small percentage as well

HAMMERTIME hows it feel to drive a CLASSIC  :-D the GENERAL was a nice truck it its time.
Title: Re: What kind of truck do you drive?
Post by: Mike Malone on December 18, 2005, 04:29:32 PM

After 1 week with this 500 14-litre Detroit it feels pretty strong but the biggest noticeable thing is that with the electronic "Lightning" transmission your foot needs to be on the throttle against the EGR "air pump" all of the time.

I was under the impresson that Detroit cleaned up most of their troubles with the 14 litre EGR engine by droppng the AiResearch turbo and going with the Holset.

Average fuel economy has been 6.5 Imperial with most payloads around 35,000 pounds and pretty crummy weather. Strong headwinds on Friday cut most of the economy back to 5.7 but tailwnd on the way home improved it greatly.

I haven't any problem accepting that it won't get the 8/9 MPG Imperial that the old 12.7 430 managed.

HAMMERTIME hows it feel to drive a CLASSIC? :-D the GENERAL was a nice truck it its time.

I don't mind it, she's not such a bad old (soon to be classic) truck. I kept hearing that it was a real nice truck in its day, but I didn't believe it till I picked this brochure (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6573137703&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1) ?up off ebay a couple months ago. I usually have the choice between T-6 (http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/jonathan_zavitz/2003/dec08/p000699.jpg) , a 1986 Freightliner FL or The General, and lately I'll always grab The General. Like Jim said - There always seems to be a Fruitliner in the yard, so I might as well use something that has a bit of uniqueness to it. :-D I see you have a few pieces of equipment listed in the trader this week Jim, including your Genera (http://www.trader.ca/search/Results.asp?BFROM=1&BAD=N&BPRICE=N&BTYPE=B&BCAT=3&BOREGION=-1&BYEAR1=1987&BYEAR2=1987&BPRICE1=4500&BPRICE2=4500&BKEYWORD=&BMAKE=58&BMODEL=&category=3&region=-1&makeid=58&adcopy=&multiphoto=N&SortBy=askprice&SortOrder=d&DisplayType=pictures&DisplayRowCount=48&mknm=58&mdnm=&subcategory=-1&CAT=3)l . That 1951 GMC (http://www.trader.ca/search/Results.asp?BFROM=1&BAD=N&BPRICE=N&BTYPE=B&BCAT=3&BOREGION=-1&BYEAR1=1950&BYEAR2=1952&BPRICE1=&BPRICE2=&BKEYWORD=&BMAKE=58&BMODEL=&category=3&region=-1&makeid=58&adcopy=&multiphoto=N&SortBy=askprice&SortOrder=d&DisplayType=pictures&DisplayRowCount=48&mknm=58&mdnm=&subcategory=-1&CAT=3) caught my attention, I didn't know you had one of those....neat looking truck!!!! Do you have any history on it? :-D :-D

Owner operator , the few GMC GENERAL company trucks at the end were white , 48" flat top bunks with single stack  company trucks were never flashy , there were some O/O's that had W900's in the late 80's that looked like upgraded company type trucks 60" flat tops single stack Alum front / steel rear  different paint  1 of each  Black , White  and  Blue

I once worked on a jobsite where the marble was shipped from overseas via container, then brought down from Canada by Zavitz. Some of the trucks had the old red and white circle, while the others looked like a bumper sticker, with Zavitz in black with a red maple leaf on one end and a red star on the other. Would the latter be the Zavitz Transport International logo?

Yes the BUMPER STICKER decal ( never heard it called that but it sure looked like 1 ) was the logo after the AUSIE took over. there was a few O/O with the old decals and they taped over the BOTHERS TRANSPORT portion

I parked it a few months ago when the fuel got so high and work slowed down and I couldn't keep up with the up keep.  I'll get it going again soon.  I won't sell him for all the tea in China.  I still have the first truck I bought in Feb of '85, my short hood  73 KW (my first baby).  My husband passed away and I have our short hood 71 KW and our truck from haites-the cab over Pete that broke us.  ha

Having been in the trucking industry here in the United States for 36 years, I follow the money and benefits. If they're good, I'll drive what the company has...no matter what.

Me, pictured in front of my bid tractor, a 1987 GMC Brigadier, I'm a P&D driver for Yellow freight these days. As I describe my ride to others, it always stated as; "A single owner, low mileage classic!" Yes, I haul triples with this unit!

What is so neat about this job, medical, dental, and retirement is paid by Yellow Transportation. I also get to sleep in my own bed, each and every night...

Working over 8 hours, includes "inch an a half."

Give me a choice between the latest, best, highest HP unit on line drive, or the oldest tractor still working P & D. I'll go with sleeping in my own bed every night and doing the pick-ups with a classic! Been there, done that, own the Tee-Shirt.

I drive mostly 2002 Volvo FM12 380hp.
Sometimes 2002  Mercedes Benz Actros 1840 ~400hp
At this summer i drove quite a lot with 1991 Scania R113 380?hp (i think itīs tuned up),
I like that Scania very much, only problem is 9 th. gear jump off (10 spd)  :x I think i drive with that also at next summer :-D
All of those are semi-trucks and i pull van-trailes
Sometimes i have to drive MB Atego straight truck, i donīt like drive with light-trucks as that Atego, those light trucks feels so cheap after bigger trucks!

I can post pics of those trucks someday!

That's pretty big for a semi, you have triaxle trailer? In sweden they can have 60 ton (or was it 24 meter) semis with 6x2 tractor and 4 axles under trailer. Btw, how's the fuel consumption in your truck? I would imagine it's big because hub reduction and tandem drive.

Thatīs 55l /km if I counted correctly, and thatīs pretty much for a 60ton combination.... Of course the hub reduction drive addes a little... But anyway

I own a small moving business with my fiance. We have two 14 foot cube vans and a trailer.

1996 GMC 3500 Vandura (deisel engine)

1993 GMC 3500 Vandura (gas engine)

1998 14 foot United Cargo trailer

both automatic and are good work trucks

I don't want to own a 18 wheeler with the costs to run one of them is really expensive. Alot of owner operators are going belly up due the high price of fuel and such.

I agree, it makes me sick to see the farmers selling off to developers and now those fields are growing houses. I dont blame them though, just no money in farming anymore. 50% of the Boise area population is Californians who sell thier $500,000 house and come here and buy a $200,000 bigger house, then a big SUV, a diesel pickup "to haul groceries" ,camper, atvs, "you know thier country now"!!! STAY HOME we have enough outsiders, they need a big gate in JordanValley,Or to stop these people!!! :x

Buy, sell, haul, mostly, but we do have a pretty nice lease on 1000 acres. But like I said before, land owner couldnt resist and in 2 years it will only be 5 to 600 acres :x
I honestly dont know what our great great grandchildren will eat! But when you can make more money over night than you made in a lifetime farming, I dont blame them!

Thanks Ray!! I keep on bothering my dad to get a new truck but he says that it is still a good truck with low kilometres on it. To tell you the truth I don't like it because it barley has any chrome on it and it is hard to keep clean with all the grease it gets on it from my dad working on it every week. It's a good thing that it does not break down a lot. I think the last time my dad took a day off to repair the truck was roughly 2.5 years ago. BUT I am proud to have a working truck not a show truck because a working truck gets you the big bucks. ;) :D :o

So i am sort off testdriving for the North-American and Aussie/NZ fellow truckers. It has the MX engine with Ad-blue,which will be on sale in the USA from 2010(please correct me if i am wrong)

ps i gross out at 97000pounds (legal)

Fangio can you tell me more about stability of those combination , i mean it is pretty short , do you drive 20ft tank or 25.6 or something like this?
how many L have those containers and are they always full?

there is one company in my area used to drive same kind of containers they have some extra short 2axle trailer only for 20ft they look pretty unstable to me

Ivan,my wheelbase is almost the same as a long trailer(only 1 meter shorter which just a little bit shy off a yard).
That trailer has TEBS(new generation EBS),ECAS(electronic airsuspension, which means the computer on it communacates with the computer in the truck),DPC(shockabsorvers that are linked to the level off loading, the heavier the load the more they work) and "old skool" big airbags.
So stability isn't a problem.(if you drive the right way)

Tank is picture is 31000L(8200 gallons).
No baffles(schalwande).
But they aren't the biggest ones we haul,we have 35000l (9250 gal) also, again without baffles.
And they are never full.(there is a legal reason for that)

I drive 20",25" and 30".And using a 20" chassis for this kind off work is long gone here(the weights are to high to haul the loads)

What is the need to run a TRUCK at 85 MPH? :?

I don't know what the lure is Can Man. Why not run er' at 60mph and save the fuel! I guess not everybody is out to earn to money in this racket, but with such small profit margins you?d thing these guys would start smartening up.

PRICE OF FUEL IS ONLY GOING UP!? :|
I used to be a pretty hard runner.

The agents where I used to be leased to only offered the time sensitive loads that payed BIG bucks to the drivers that would get it there on time.

Losing 2 or 3 mpg because your running fast is a small price to pay when hauling one of those loads.

When I was hauling regular loads that weren't on a tight schedule, I would slow down and try for the best fuel mileage I could get.

You know guys I drove from 1968 til 1994 and don`t think I ever drove anything as nice as half you guys have driven or have the truck knowledge you guys have. The nicest was my last, a Freightliner FLD forward steer axle twin screw daycab. 350 cummins w/9rr. They were Ryder rentals and had lots of bells and whistles for a rental Company. Our company treated us really good when it came to our trucks. Anyway, that`s my story. I hope I didn`t bore you all ::)
